Detik.Com reported yesterday that some flights to Batam was being diverted to Pekanbaru due to bad weather and haze. It was reported that a Batavia Air flight from Medan to Batam was forced to land at Pekanbaru at around 13:20hrs West Indonesian Time (or 14:20hrs Singapore time) yesterday (Saturday, 30 September 2006), while another flight, which is a Lion Air flight from Jakarta was also diverted to Pekanbaru and landed there about 10 minutes later.
This is a bit strange, considering the location of Batam's Hang Nadim airport, which is not too far from Singapore, only about 20km away. It's true that the PSI (Pollutant Standards Index) level in Singapore is a bit high in the last couple of days, however there were no reports of very high haze level or very bad weather which can cause any flight disruptions. A check on yesterday's flight information at Changi airport's website also does not show any cancellations on flights arriving in Singapore during the specified period.
Couldn't be that 20km distance can make such a big difference in terms of weather? Or, could be?

Om A and Tante Wiwied's Farewell Party
29 September 2006: We went to the farewell party of Om A and Tante Wiwied's family, at the function room of their condo, Symphony Heights, around Upper Bukit Timah Road, just 5 minutes drive from home. The whole family will be moving back to Jakarta. Tante Wiwied and her son Akram will be going back to Jakarta tomorrow (Sunday, 1 October 2006), while Om A will leave Singapore for Jakarta by the end of November 2006.
As a side note: A is my classmate at high school. We both studied at the SMA Negeri 5 Bandung, on Jalan Belitung, Bandung, West Java, Indonesia. It's been a long time since I last met him, until couple of years ago, when we coincidentally met at the Woodlands checkpoint, on our way back from Johor Bahru. Turned out to be that we were both working in Singapore, so several months later (which was about three years ago), we paid a visit to their home at Hume Park (at that time). [End of side note]
We met many of our friends there. Inka and Irza were very happy to be able to play with their friends, such as Akram, Hanan and Haifa, Abang Dzaky, Athaya and Alita, Aily and Algo, Noe, Zidan and Syifa, Dandy and many more.
Apologise for the bad quality of some of the photos, since they were captured from moving video image. I also do not know some of the names of Inka and Irza's friends shown on the pictures, should you know their names, please do let me know so I can update the captions. :)

"Aeroplane."
"Oh, itu mah pesawat, Dek, bukan pewasad."
"Oh iya, Adek lupa bahasa Indonesianya..." sambil nyengir.
Weleh weleh...

Genting Highlands

Tamu Istimewa dari Jakarta
Keesokan harinya, Minggu, 3 September 2006, kita ramai-ramai berangkat ke Genting Highlands. Liputannya menyusul. :)

KLIA and Jusco Tebrau City
On Tuesday, 5 September 2006 morning, after having breakfast at the hotel, we checked out from the hotel and left Genting for the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), since Aki, Uncle Arief, Aunty Via, Alif and Kayla would be flying off directly from KL to Jakarta, while Ene will still follow us back to Singapore.
Since they were taking AirAsia flight, we went to the Budget/Low Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT) instead of KLIA's main terminal. The LCCT is quite far, on the other side of the runway, near the Sepang F1 circuit.
We then continue our journey towards Singapore. After having a late lunch at the Restoran Jejantas Ayer Keroh rest area, Malacca, we went to our next destination, the Jusco Tebrau City shopping centre in Johor Bahru.
This is the newest shopping mall around Johor area, and it's located along Tebrau Highway, the main road leading to Kota Tinggi from Johor Bahru, just north of the junction with Pasir Gudang Highway.
The Jusco department store is the anchor tenant there, with quite a lot of restaurants and cafes, including Bread Talk, which is halal in Malaysia. There's also a food court and amusement centre for kids at the third floor.
Mama and Ene were, of course, shopping around, while I took Inka and Irza to the amusement centre. We also had our dinner at the food court, before going back to Singapore via the causeway, which is jammed at the Malaysia side, but smooth on Singapore side.
Genting Highlands: Outdoor Theme Park and Cable Car
The next day, Monday, 4 September 2006, we explore the Outdoor Theme Park. The entrance is just outside our hotel, so it's very convenient for us to reach there in the morning, of course after we had a nice breakfast at the hotel.
The bumper cars are again become the hits for the kids! And Inka's favourite is the Spinner!
In the evening, I and Irza brought Aki and Ene to take the Genting Skyway Cable Car down to the Lower Cable Car Station, and back up. Irza also accompanied Uncle Arief and family to the Snow World at First World Plaza, similar to Singapore's Snow City, while I and Inka tried the 4D MotionMaster Theatre.

Genting Highlands: Integrated Resort and First World Plaza
On Sunday, 3 September 2006, we and our special guests from Jakarta set off for Genting Highlands, Malaysia. We left Singapore in the morning, and we took the Tuas second link route to avoid Johor Bahru and the causeway traffic. With a stopover at Seremban for lunch, the total journey took around 5 hours.
We took the Cheras route to Genting, that is, after the Sungai Besi toll gate, we exit the North-South Expressway and hit the Middle Ring Road 2 past Cheras, Ampang and Setapak (Jalan Ulu Kelang), towards Kuantan. The ring road will join the Karak Expressway seamlessly, and we took the Genting Highlands exit just before a tunnel.
We stayed at the Theme Park Hotel, which is just next to the entrance of the Outdoor Theme Park. We spent our first day in Genting by exploring the integrated resort and having fun at the Indoor Theme Park at First World Plaza.
The kids are having fun with the bumper cars, while the whole family took the ferris wheel, Venice-style gondola, Rio Float and some other attractions.

Sentosa: Palawan Beach
Saturday, 2 September 2006
From Imbiah Lookout, we proceeded to Palawan Beach, our next destination. We parked our car at the Beach Carpark and took the beach tram to Palawan Beach. The beach has some newly renovated facilities and the kids are having fun playing at the beach.
After having a great time playing at the beach, we had dinner at the new Palawan beach food court. There's an "Indonesian Delight" stall with quite a lot of Indonesian dishes such as grilled chicken, etc. Next to it, there's another stall serving western dishes.
Sentosa: Imbiah Lookout
Saturday, 2 September 2006
After finished shopping at Bugis, we proceeded to Sentosa. Our first destinations are the attractions at the Imbiah Lookout cluster, near the Cable Car Plaza.
We visited Merlion and went to the top of the Merlion. We also rode the Luge and took the skyride (previously known as chairlift) back. Irza accompanied Uncle Arief's family to take the cable car to Mount Faber and back, while the rest of us had some coffee at the Coffee Bean just outside the Cable Car Plaza.

Bugis and Kallang
The next day, Saturday 2 September 2006, we took our special guests to Bugis. I and Uncle Arief took the kids to the amusement centre at the third floor of Seiyu Bugis Junction while my parents, my wife and Aunty Via had a quick shopping spree at Mustafa Centre in Little India.
We then walked to the Banquet halal food court at the first floor of the Raffles Hospital just next to the Bugis Junction, and had our lunch there.
After lunch, we went back to Bugis Junction and while my parents and my wife continued shopping, I and Irza accompanied Uncle Arief, Aunty Via, Alif and Kayla to take the MRT to Kallang, and back. :)
Islam and Tourism
In one of his articles regarding Islam and tourism, Patung mentioned that Islam is bad for tourism, because some attempts to forbid activities associated as sinful by Islam, such as drinking, harms the growth of tourism in some Indonesian areas with Muslim-majority population, such as Lombok. While I agree that such attempts will deter tourists from coming to the region, it doesn't mean that the religion itself is bad for tourism.
I would like to emphasize that it's not just a matter of religion.
We don't need to go too far to see an example. Malaysia is also a country with a Muslim-majority population. But the country has successfully attracted tourists from all over the world, especially East Asia (China and the region) and Middle East countries. So, it's not true that Islam is bad for tourism.
What's the issue here, then?
Tolerance.
Malaysians are generally more tolerant towards other religions. Even when the Malaysian Muslims forbid themselves from drinking, they do not forbid people from other religions from doing so. Even when Islam forbids gambling, the government still allows some casinos to be built at Genting Highlands for non-Muslim Malaysians and tourists, of course after ensuring that Malaysian Muslims are prohibited to enter the casinos.
So, again, it's not true that Islam is bad for tourism. We just have to be more tolerant to people from other religion. If the Malaysians can do it, why can't we?

Special Guests from Jakarta
On Friday, 1st of September 2006, we receive special guests from Jakarta, Indonesia: my parents, my brother Arief and his wife Via, and their two children, Alif and Kayla. Inka and Irza were very excited to see their grandfather (Aki) and grandmother (Ene), as well as their nephews, Alif and Kayla.
In the evening, all of us went to the swimming pool within our apartment complex, as well as to the playground nearby. After which, we had nice BBQ satay for our dinner, at one of the BBQ pits at the poolside.
Irza's Birthday (Part 2)
26 August 2006: Aidan came to the birthday party quite late, because he needed to wait for his parents, Tante Shinta and Om Wisnu, to finish working. Aidan then had a nice splash time at the swimming pool together with Inka, Irza and Tante Shinta, while Om Wisnu chose to have a good nap by the poolside. ;)
After finished swimming, we all went back to our house and Aidan was happily playing with Inka and Irza.

A Eulogy for Inong
I remember the first time I knew Inong was on early February this year, when I stumbled upon her weblog, Cerita Bunda Zidan & Syifa (Stories of Zidan & Syifa's Mum). Finding out that she and her family live in Bukit Batok, very near to our place, and also finding out that her son Zidan was studying at the same school as Irza, PPIS, I added comments to her shoutbox. She then visited my Rumah Indra weblog and added comments there, and turned out to be that she knew my wife from the IndoSing-Mums community, and also she knew some of my friends from BemoNet, such as Kukuh TW and Eko Juniarto. What a small world.
After exchanging several comments on each other's blogs, we managed to meet up on several occasions. My wife discreetly ordered a strawberry tiramisu cake from her for our wedding anniversary, and I collected the cake from her house some time in April. I believe that was the first time I met her. I also met her, Haris and the whole family during Adam and Hanan's birthday party at West Coast Park, ISM gathering at East Coast Park and PPIS Sports Day at Bukit Batok, and that's when I started to know Haris. I also met her during Mela's farewell at Harbourfront.
Inong is a great cook. All the recipes at her Dapur Bunda blog prove it. The strawberry tiramisu cake is not the only cake I and my wife have ordered from her. Once we ordered some chocolate and cheese Indonesian-style martabak from her and just two weeks ago, couple of days before she's gone, we ordered Cars-themed two-tier birthday cake for Irza's 5th birthday party. Guess what, everybody enjoyed the cake, a photo taken by Mbak Hany proves it. Nobody thought that it would be the last birthday cake she has made for us. :(
She's also a friendly person. She has many friends since she's very active in the cyberspace. She's a very active blogger, and her Cerita Bunda Zidan&Syifa blog is now on the 15th position of the Hericz's version of Indonesian Top 100 Blogs. She has several blogs, such as Cerita Bunda Zidan&Syifa, Dapur Bunda (Bunda's Kitchen), Puisi Inong (Inong's Poems) and also Inong's Page at Multiply, among others. She's also very active in some blogger communities, such as Blogger Family (Blogfam) and the Indonesian Blogger Muslim community. In Singapore, she's also a member of the IndoSing-Mums and Indo-Sing community.
Therefore, it's obvious that when she passed away, a lot of people missed her, even though those people might not know her personally and only know about her and her family from her blogs. It is even reported that about more than 1,000 people turned out at her family's house in Jakarta, waiting for her body to be sent from Singapore to Jakarta, for her funeral. The way how she wrote her family's journal, especially about her two lovely kids, Zidan and Syifa, touches the hearts of many of her blog readers. Up until now, condolences are still coming in through her shoutboxes and comments on her blogs, showing that a lot of people really missed her and her writings.
Selamat jalan, Inong. May you rest in peace.
