Singapore Cycling Tour (3): Pasir Ris Park, Tampines Park Connector, Pasir Ris Town Park

Date: Saturday, 14 February 2009
Location: Pasir Ris Park, Tampines Park Connector, Pasir Ris Town Park, east of Singapore

This is part of my Singapore Cycling Tour series:

1. East Coast Park and Coastal Park Connector
2. Bukit Batok East, Ulu Pandan and Jurong Park Connector

On Saturday, 14 February 2009, I brought Inka and Irza, with our bicycles mounted on the bike carrier, to Pasir Ris Park. Located on the eastern end of Singapore, this park is another great location for cycling in Singapore, other than East Coast Park, Bishan Park and Pulau Ubin.

We explored the whole area of Pasir Ris Park, from west to east. West side of the park is where you will find the huge playground complex, cater for children of all ages. It was also the location of a gathering and birthday party, almost two years ago.

There's a horse riding lessons and pony rides centre called Gallop Stable at the southern end of the park, near carpark C. The eastern end of the park is located near two resorts around Pasir Ris: Costa Sands Resort (Downtown East) and Aloha Resort (Loyang). It's also very near to the Downtown East complex with its Wild Wild Wet and Escape Theme Park attractions.

Near the bridge across Sungei Tampines, just behind Escape Theme Park's go-kart circuit (since we can hear the sound of the karts running), there's the junction to Tampines Park Connector, which will lead you to Pasir Ris Town Park and onward to Sunplaza Park via the Tampines neighborhood.

We ventured the Tampines Park Connector up to Pasir Ris Town Park, which was also the location of a birthday party three years ago, as well as a gathering more than two years ago. We had a quick early dinner at Arnold's Express, the only halal eatery at Pasir Ris Town Park. The kids loved their fried chicken.

Singapore Cycling Tour (2): Bukit Batok East, Ulu Pandan and Jurong Park Connector

Date: 17 January 2009 and 7 February 2009
Location: Bukit Batok East, Ulu Pandan Park Connector, Jurong Park Connector

This is part of my Singapore Cycling Tour series:

1. East Coast Park and Coastal Park Connector

On 17 January 2009, I was cycling with Irza near our residence around Bukit Batok East, and found this Ulu Pandan Park Connector along Bukit Batok East heading southwest. On 7 February 2009, we tried to venture the park connector towards Jurong East.

However, I am a bit disappointed with this park connector. After greeted with a set of twelve zodiac-theme animal stone statues near Bukit Batok East Garden, we encountered very high stairs next to Keming Primary School. So both myself and Irza needed to carry the bicycles upstairs. Wished that we took the roadside instead.

Leaving Bukit Batok towards Jurong East, we had to bring our bicycles on the overhead bridge across the PIE. It was very hot, not many trees around the area. After crossing the PIE, we found out that there's a junction there and we can have two alternatives: continue along the Ulu Pandan Park Connector towards the AYE, or take the Jurong Park Connector towards Jurong Lake and Chinese Garden, and eventually to the newly-constructed Jurong Central Park near Boon Lay.

We decided to venture west along the Jurong Park Connector. This is a new extension to the Jurong Park Connector, which is not yet on the map shown at National Park Board's website (at the time of writing this entry). Since it's a new track, not much plantation along the way and since it was near afternoon at that time, it was quite hot.

Therefore, we decided to stop after reaching Jurong Town Hall Road and de-tour to the nearest McDonalds outlet at Jurong East St 24 (near Yuhua area). From there, we decided to go back home, not going through the same park connector route but following the normal roads, which is much faster. :)

Therefore, we haven't managed to reach the Chinese Garden / Jurong Lake area of the Jurong Park Connector, which I heard is the best part of the connector. I plan to mount our bicycles into our car's bike carrier and go straight there instead, to bypass the not-so-nice eastern part of the park connector.

Berminat ikutan? :)

Deepavali This Year Moved to a Saturday

This year’s Deepavali, which previously has been tentatively set on a Sunday, 15 November 2009 (which means the following Monday, 16 November 2009 would be a public holiday), has been brought forward one month earlier, on Saturday, 17 October 2009.

When Singapore’s Ministry of Manpower releases the list of Singapore public holiday every year, the date set for Deepavali is always tentative because it has to be checked against the Indian Almanacs when they become available. Last year, MOM also moved the Deepavali date albeit only one day earlier, from Tuesday to Monday. It is just so unfortunate that for this year, the date is being moved from a Sunday to a Saturday.

This means that the public holiday will only benefit those who are working on Saturdays, and that Monday, 16 November 2009 is no longer declared as a public holiday. :(

In Singapore, if a public holiday falls on a Sunday, the following Monday will also be a public holiday. For example, since Hari Raya Puasa for this year falls on a Sunday, 20 September 2009, the following Monday, 21 September 2009 will also be a public holiday.

Another thing to note, in Singapore, the government has always been able to predict the day for Hari Raya Puasa correctly, and the actual Hari Raya date normally falls on the predicted date without any revision. This is different from the Indonesian government who always decides the exact date of Hari Raya at the last minute, waiting for the result of hilal (moon) sighting. Not too sure where does the Singapore goverment get their formula from? :)

Tapi lebih mahal, $4.30 (ga ada diskon).Tempura sushinya juga enak2.

Untuk minuman, blue soda yang pakai green tea ice cream asik sekali.

Singapore Cycling Tour (1): East Coast Park and Coastal Park Connector

Date: Sunday, 11 January 2009
Location: East Coast Park and Coastal Park Connector

This would be my first album entry on my "Singapore Cycling tour" along parks and park connectors network around Singapore.

As I have mentioned last time, East Coast Park is one of our favourite cycling place in Singapore. On 11 January 2009, we (myself, Inka and Irza) tried to venture the eastern area of East Coast Park, and the cycling track led us to a park connector called the Coastal Park Connector, which links East Coast Park with Changi Beach Park.

Since we rented the bicycles (tandem bicycles for myself and Inka, and a smaller bicycle for Irza, we haven't bought our bicycles at that time) from a kiosk at Raintree Cove, we did not plan to venture up to Changi Beach Park since we had to go back and return our bikes and I didn't want to risk tiring the kids. However, we did reach the best stretch of the coastal park connector, which is the long straight track along Changi Coast Rd, just next to the Changi airport runway.

I remember that we were cycling towards Changi Beach Park and just next to us, a Jetstar plane was about to take off. We were then preparing ourselves for the race against the jet plane... ready... get set... go... and there we go... cycling as fast as we can to race against the jet plane... of course... we lost... :) :) What a exhilarating experience... :) :)

Overall, we really enjoyed cycling along the coastal park connector, with different types of view along the way: sea view, garden view, golf course view and airport view, with less crowds compared to the busy East Coast Park stretch.
